Behavior Expectations and Consequences

Positive behavior is a necessary part of the learning environment.  In our class, the main focus is on respect and responsibility.   We take a great deal of time at the beginning of the year to discuss what these words mean to us as members of our classroom and school community.  In order to function smoothly, we need to establish rules that we all agree to follow.  We will discuss this as a class during the first week of school and on a continuing basis as needed.  We are each responsible for our own choices, and making positive choices will be stressed.  Since we will all make mistakes now and then, we will try to see our mistakes as opportunities for positive change.

Glen Arden participates in the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) Program.  There are four guiding PBIS principles:  being Respectful, Accountable, Mindful, and Safe.

Across third grade, students keep a weekly self-monitoring sheet.  They receive tally marks for exemplary behavior, and they get "deltas" when they need to make a change in their behavior.

At the end of each day, if a student has all tallies and no deltas, they get two points.  If a student has more tallies than deltas, they get one point.  If they have more deltas than tallies, they get zero points for the day.  Any more than three deltas, they get zero points.  A "tie" equals zero points.  Students can therefore earn up to 10 tallies per week.  Tally sheets are collected and recorded and sent home.

When students reach a grade-level goal for PBIS points, they are invited to sign a classroom celebration poster each grading period.  Those students get to participate in a grade-level celebration of their success.  Students who have not met their goal will sit out of the celebration and work on a self-reflection assignment and/or catch up on missed work.

PBIS GOALS

First Quarter: 50 points and no more than 3 missing or late assignments.

Second Quarter: 60

Third Quarter: 70

Fourth Quarter: 80
