Welcome to my Classroom
My name is Luz Maria Rodriguez and I am glad to be the third grade Spanish Immersion teacher at Glen Arden Elementary School this year.
I was born in Zipaquirá, Colombia. This is a small city 30 minutes away from Bogotá the Capital City. I got my degree as a Spanish/English teacher at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional in Bogotá. In 1995, I was granted a British Council/ Icetex Scholarship in order to be a Spanish Assistant at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys/Girls in Canterbury, UK. It was an extraordinary experience I will never forget. After that, I went back to Bogota and started teaching Language Arts, math and science in third, fourth, and before coming here, in fifth grade at "Colegio Los Nogales" (one of the most outstanding schools in the city). While being part of this community, in the year 2000, I had the opportunity to fulfill my Masters in Arts in ESL/EFL with a special program for international students at Saint Michael's College VT, and I was also granted a Fulbright Scholarship as exchange teacher at 135 St. School, Gardena, CA.
As you can see, teaching has given me all these wonderful opportunities to learn and be part of new cultures. I feel absolutely blessed and thankful for it.
After being at Los Nogales for 18 years, I decided I needed a change and a new challenge in my professional life, that's why I applied to the VIF. Now, I'm here to enhance the students' second language acquisition in Spanish. Fantastic!
I believe the success of our students is the result of committed work amongst the parents, the teachers, and definitely the students. As part of the third grade team, I'll be doing my best to accompany the students during this year. Please contact me any time you need to and I'll be more than glad to help.
