Girls On the Run

Glen Arden Elementary has its third and fourth grade girls running in circles – literally! We have begun our fall Girls On the Run program, a twelve week course which meets after school each Monday and Wednesday for an hour and a half. Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization. The curricula focuses on building self esteem and physical and emotional well-being in preparation to face the most challenging years of adolescence. Each session incorporates interactive, uplifting games developed to teach girls a specific lesson, while training them to ruin or walk a 5K (3.1 mile) run at UNCA in December.

Each program is led by a team of thirteen trained female co-coaches from the Glen Arden staff that guide and mentor the girls through the program. Some topics that are covered include: body image and the media; making healthy decisions; dangers of drugs and alcohol; positive communication; cooperation and team building; and contributing to the community. Sixty-four very enthusiastic girls dress out each Wednesday and gather with their coaches to improve health and physical fitness, build supportive relationships, develop a positive self image, respect their peers, cooperate in a group, strive for personal goals, and celebrate being a girl. Come and watch us run!
